Review: The Neverhood

Back in the mid 90's there was a game made entirely out of clay, this game was the Neverhood. Before I start I want to get one thing straight, you will never get a game like this again, this has to be the most well thought out and abstract game of my time (19 years) and new games of this current gen have nothing on it, with that said onto the review.

The game was made by dreamworks and published by Microsoft (before they went all shit and released the Halo franchise). This is one of your simple point and click adventure games, but what gives this game its uniqueness is it was made completely from clay, every single house, floor and person. Dreamworks showed damn near unreachable commitment by making this game in a frame by frame setup (and being an animator I know how tedious this can be). Your character, named Clayman and is the last hope for The Neverhood, although he doesn't know it yet, as Klogg has taken Hoborg's crown and claimed leadership over Neverhood. Your aim is to find all the hidden tapes and just generally have fun in The Neverhood, before stopping Klogg, be this the good or evil way. The game is broken up by hilarious cut-scenes such as this one.

As you can tell the cut-scenes give this game its comedic rating, and all through the game they manage to deliver fantastic cut-scenes without a strong use of dialogue, which I think is an achievement in itself. The game in all isn't that long by today's standards, maybe 5 - 6 hours if you were to really grind into it, but it doesn't matter as this game does so much in that time. Unfortunately the game didn't really kick off back then due to first person shooters taking the gamer market, which is a real shame as this had so much potential to be a success. Another good thing to come out of this game is there is supposedly a movie coming out in Q3 of this year, which I'm hoping will bring a new chapter of the Neverhood story and show all the game companies that a good game isn't always about how it looks and what weapons you can use. Hope you enjoyed my review or rambling, which ever you may call it and check back soon for another one.
