First things first, this is a RC and the link i will provide at the end of the review is from the MS site and im not responsable for any damage to your system when using windows 7.
So without further a-do let's crack on.
Coming in a modest 3.5Gb ISO this operating system packs alot of punch for it's size. But don't let that fool you, this operating system can run on even the oldest of systems, with reports of it running on a Pentium 2 with 128mb of ram and a 4Mb graphics card. But for those wanting to know the official specs needed they are as followed.
1 GHz or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor
1 GB RAM (32-bit) / 2 GB RAM (64-bit)
16 GB available disk space (32-bit) / 20 GB (64-bit)
DirectX 9 graphics processor with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver
After the installation your met with a more flashy, artistic welcome screen than what vista has. It's nice to see that they have put more effort in the welcome screen this time, vista's startup always made me think that it wasn't finished, that they missed it out or forgot about it. But that's not the end, oh no, after that your met with a beautiful blue logon screen which i had to just stare in awe at, MS really put thier time and effort in to the looks of this, but i know what your thinking, yes it looks better but i bet because of this it's slower? well, you'd be wrong the load-up was phenominal, vista took about 5 seconds for me, after 5 seconds I was on the web and ready to go. With 7 is there even a loading time? I was on the web in about 2 seconds and i have alot of things on start-up, about 15 to be exact.
The start bar or "Super Bar" as it's called now is also has some new features like a little bar at the end opposite the "Orb" which instantly takes you to your desktop, clicking it again brings up all windows you were using prior. Another new(ish) feature is the preview windows, nothing new to be fully true but they have gotten a big revamp. Aero glass, bigger windows and when hovered over they show the actual window/app. The notification area has a menu instead of the usual expandable/retractable arrow, and lastly the programs/folders are now grouped with little preview windows which confused me at first but after you get used to it it's so much more easier to make sure you bring up the right windows, last thing you want is to bring up a porn site when your parents walk by.
Enough of the looks for now, let's get down to the nitty gritty. Windows 7 unlike vista isn't a RAM hog, when I put windows 7 on my machine I did an upgrade, so I kept all my programs etc, and 7 used 800Mb less ram than vista at idle. That's nearly a whole Gig less than vista, and the really baffling thing is windows 7 has more features than vista. Another fantastic feature is the UAC, oh wait let me be more specific, Variable UAC. In vista UAC was either on or off, if off you were pestered every time to put it back on, this time you can set it to different levels, 4 in all. High, Medium, low and off. Thank you MS for listening to us, we hate UAC and it does nothing, it wont stop a child installing a virus or won't stop a virus spreading as by now the virus's would have found a way to make UAC allow them without user intervention.
Now i know your eyes are bleeding after reading that so take a rest and check back soon for part 2.
